Brain facts

In April 2001, 5.2 million people were providing unpaid care in England and Wales

This website was originally started as an outlet for personal expression during Anita’s 15 month recovery in hospital. Brain injury is all to easily hidden from public consciousness, for many it is the ultimate challenge, greater than a hundred Everest’s. Life is not meant to be easy, once we truly understand this greater truth we can transcend it (if only we could understand it all the time!). Anita going out for the evening in GreeceNo matter how much the hardship it’s ultimately down to ourselves and the way we handle things. Although it may at times be an outlet for frustration this website will seek to present the truth of brain injury and it will be an organic journey following whatever path comes to light during it’s life. It can therefore be shaped as much by you as it is by us.

The physiotherapy issue

Howard and Anita braving the coldOne of the key topics on this website is the shortage of neuro-physiotherapy for brain injured people. We have been clearly told by our own health authority in Milton Keynes that there is sufficient resources to meet the needs. Although we have received some terrific personal care in hospitals for which we are enormously grateful, we don’t apologise for sounding so negative about this issue.

An area like brain rehabilitation appears to have less weight than that given to areas such as education and sports centres of excellence. That is an absolute disgrace, because people who choose to improve themselves after such a devastating injury should morally be given every opportunity to do so. The negative attitude we have seen during rehabilitation is appalling, people should be given the full support that will help them reach their potential! After all sports people who get terrific backing are only trying to win trophies, what is it worth for someone to have the dignity to take themselves to the toilet or even pull up their own trousers! Surely it’s worth a try.

The spiritual self

Howard looking up, hair has grown very longThe physical self is an exploration as to what are we? This website is not just about brain injury but an exploration of the deeper spiritual journey that life brings to us. The title “Losing the physical self” could represent many things to different people. It could represent the outer physical damage taken out by the brain injury on Anita. It’s real meaning is in the exploration of what the physical side of us means spiritually i.e. “I am not my body”. How much do we rely on the way we look? Worse still, brain injury can actually play around with the kind of person you are. What is the real you?
