Pain in the leg is not so bad
Anita told me yesterday that all of a sudden she could feel more in her leg. I tested her out to see if she could feel my hand on her leg and she did indeed respond correctly. She is feeling quite a bit of discomfort in it which from our point of view could be a good thing. When taking her shoe of her left foot she could feel it for the first time.
One of Anita’s big problems is a condition known as preprioception, which is the inability of the brain to respond/communicate with parts of the body. The brain can remake those pathways that were lost and it’s one of the things that would improve her over time. She was quite positive about this development though I guess I am more guarded. I was told by a nurse back when Anita was in critical care that there will be a few steps forward and some back. How right she was! In the early hospital stages the emotional rollercoaster can be an absolute killer. I saw it virtually destroy many people. You have to try and remain totally level headed and calm, it’s the one thing I did that has kept me sane. Therefore I have to ask is this development a glitch or can it really help anita walk again?
Speaking of walking I can now say that Anita has actually walked on her own for the first time. When I say on her own I mean with a quadrapod, strapping on her leg (backslab), strapping on her foot and a physio to catch her. I know it’s still early days but she did about 20 yards and gives encouragement to the belief that she will one day walk again!
